Mona (Mo-mon)

Mona (Mo-mon)

A little about Mona (Mo-mon)

Mona came to Nyaru Menteng in April 2001 from West Kalimantan. She was approximately two years old and weighed six kg. She was long and skinny with straight sparse hair and a great attitude. She loved the trees and would spend hours on her own exploring. But she was insecure and quickly bonded with two of her caretakers. In August she got very, very sick with malaria and thyphoid. For over a month she was in intensive care, cared for by her favorite caretakers who watched her 24 hours a day. There were many times where we thought we almost lost her, but to our relief she pulled through. The following months she was weak and we often still had to force her to drink and eat. She only very slowly begun to put on some of her lost weight and started to climb a little when she in November fell ill again with malaria and quickly dropped the weight she so slowly had gained over then previous months. But Mona is obviously tough even though she doesn’t immediately comes across as such and she pulled through this time again. Now in January 2002 she has finally begun to put on weight again albeit slowly, because she spends so much time in the trees burning off all her energy. She has become quite good at making nests or will use old ones, which she covers with new soft branches. We are hoping that Mona have had her share of illnesses so she has time to grow strong and put on some most needed weight. At the age of 2,5-3 years she only weighs 8 kg.
