Our Vision

Our vision is a world where orangutans are free from the threat of extinction and can live in the wild,

unharmed by humans.

533
Orangutans have been released
back to their home.
355
Orangutans are being cared for in
our sanctuaries.

The Problem

There are numerous threats to the viability of the remaining wild orangutan population in Indonesia and Malaysia.  The primary threat is the loss of habitat with up to 80% of suitable forest in Indonesia and Malaysia having been lost in the past 20 years. Other threats, which often go hand-in-hand with the destruction of the rainforest, are the illegal pet trade
and poaching.

Who is the chicken thief?

Our Post-Release Monitoring (PRM) teams at the release sites deep in the #rainforest of #borneo always have #Fascinating stories to tell.

Recently, the team in the Kehje Sewen Forest lost a chicken they'd been raising as a backup food supply at the camp. So far, there are two possible culprits: a monitor lizard and the little Malay civet in the photo whom team members spotted near the crime scene.

Perhaps we need to install a camera trap to prevent any false accusations and uncover the real culprit.

While our primary goal is to restore the #ecosystem for #orangutans and their #habitat, we are also responsible for protecting the other #wildlife in the Kehje Sewen Forest, like the Malay civet.

Did you know young #orangutans love to #wrestle?

It’s not just fun—it helps them get stronger, improve their motor skills, and learn to socialize.

It’s like a natural gym session and a bonding activity all in one!

#FridayFun with Franky!

#orangutan Franky is enjoying his freedom in the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park.

The Post-Release-Monitoring Team spotted him happily digging a small well by the riverbank. This activity is not only great for sensory stimulation, but playing with sand is also incredibly calming and satisfying!

Unfortunately, not all #orangutans in our care can return to their true wild home like Franky. However, they can still live happy and fulfilled lives.

#staytuned to learn how you can #help our unreleasable orangutans this upcoming #holidayseason!

Although BOS aims to rehabilitate every #orangutan for a return to the wild, sometimes that sadly is impossible.

Currently, we care for 128 orangutans who we can't release back into their #rainforest homes for various reasons. Some have suffered severe injuries, others have chronic illnesses, some are too old, and some simply cannot learn the survival skills needed to survive in the wild.

The good news is these unreleasable orangutans can still live happy and fulfilling lives on specially designed #sanctuaryislands while receiving the necessary treatment and care.
