Reno (No)

A little about Reno (No)

Reno was brought to Nyaru Menteng together with Cantik on the 11th of April. He had been confiscated some 100 km from Palangka Raya and had only been with the owners for one day. He was approx 2 years old and still quite wild. He weighed in at 7 kg. His hair is light orange and very straight. We had no success getting him out of his cage for the first week he was here, but gentle persuasion eventually got him lured within reach and he was ‘captured’ and taken to the forest next to the nursery. He went straight for the top of the trees and spend all day way up there exploring for food. Obviously he did not find enough and by late afternoon he was easily lured out of the trees with a bit of fruit. The following day after having cleared quarantine we had yet another hide and seek to get him out of the cage, and once ‘captured’ he went straight to the top of the trees… but this time he did not want to come down again and ended up sleeping in the forest for the night. We slowly and delicately got him to learn that we would not harm him (it was still early days after his traumatic parting with his killed mother and we understand how difficult it must be to trust any human) and suddenly one day he just dropped into the lap of one of the babysitters after deciding we were not so bad after all. He drinks milk like sewer and since his arrival until August he has gained a lot of weight and now weighs 10.75 kg… but it is mostly stomach. He is presently recovering from malaria which did not seem to affect him much.

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild. You can follow their progress on Orangutan Jungle School available to stream on YouTube
