Deri

Deri

A little about Deri… our saddest face

Deri came to Nyaru Menteng on the 18th of April 2001 from West Kalimantan. He had been living a sad life in a concrete cage with only a small hole for light & air. He was aenemic and would only drink chocolate milk and eat chips & cookies. It took Deri some 6 months to recover from his aenemia and from those traumas he had. In Okctober 2001 he was moved with his friends to the midway house as he was getting strong and independent and had finally changed his diet to normal milk, fruit and vegetables. He has since then never been sick and has developed his forest skills tremendously. On the 3rd of July he was found ill with Malaria falsiparum and we had to bring him back to the clinic. He would not take any fluids nor foods and we were forced to put him on IV. But his breathing was badly affected by this and we instead had to force him to drink various drinks such as fruit/milk shakes, eggshakes and dehydration drink. He was in intensive care for 24 hours. During the day at the clinic, during the night in the Managers house. We fought long battles when he was fed, awarded him when he took it without too much trouble and most of all we showered him with love and attention. Three long nerve-wrecking weeks passed by before him decided to take a little bit of fluids by himself. Slowly day by day he increased his appetite and exactly one month since he was taken ill he was well enough to go back to his friends at the midway house.. but still with this sad look on his face.

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild.
