Our Vision

Our vision is a world where orangutans are free from the threat of extinction and can live in the wild,

unharmed by humans.

539
Orangutans have been released
back to their home.
349
Orangutans are being cared for in
our sanctuaries.

The Problem

There are numerous threats to the viability of the remaining wild orangutan population in Indonesia and Malaysia.  The primary threat is the loss of habitat with up to 80% of suitable forest in Indonesia and Malaysia having been lost in the past 20 years. Other threats, which often go hand-in-hand with the destruction of the rainforest, are the illegal pet trade
and poaching.

When Bumi arrived at our Nyaru Menteng Centre on 18 June 2016, the tiny male was so incredibly weak that he could not even open his eyes. We believe that he was violently separated from his mother shortly after his birth.

But you should see him now! The 'Orangutan Jungle School' star graduated from Forest School with flying colours and is now thriving on a pre-release island.

Please help us in supporting him during this final stage of his rehabilitation journey so he can return to his true wild home soon!

Adopt Bumi today, for yourself or as a unique Christmas gift here: orangutans.co.nz/adopt

Explore Aiko's daily life at Forest School with us!

One of her favourite things to do is munch on yummy fruit while watching her classmates from above, in the trees, or from near the feeding platform on the ground.

However, to be able to provide Aiko and her friends with fresh and nutritious fruit every day, WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP THIS CHRISTMAS!

We need to build a facility at our newly relocated Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre that will be its operational heart.

In addition to other essential functions, it will store all the food for our little students, ensuring they grow strong for their future release into the wild.

Please donate urgently now so Aiko can continue enjoying her tasty snacks:

It's Giving Tuesday–a day when people around the world join together to tap into the power of human connection to create positive change.

Will you step up and be one of them?

By participating in the generosity movement, you can make this Giving Tuesday an exceptional opportunity to help us reunite our orangutan family at our new Nyaru Menteng 2 Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

However, before we can relocate the remaining orangutans, we urgently need to establish a core facility at our new centre. This operational hub will perform several essential functions: it will provide our orangutans with fresh, nutritious food, allow us to build, repair, and maintain vital enrichment structures, and offer meeting, rest and work spaces for both staff and visitors. Additionally, it will ensure that firefighting equipment is readily accessible in the event of a fire threat to our centre or the surrounding forest.

These functions are vital for the successful rehabilitation of orangutans, giving them the best chance to return to their natural habitat and supporting the growth of a new generation of wild orangutans.

Don't wait—please donate today here:
orangutans.donorsupport.co/page/bananas

By supporting this essential facility, you will help our new centre become a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hub for rescued orangutans. There, they will receive the care they need to heal from trauma, learn crucial survival skills, and get 24/7 support, whether they are unwell or just need some extra loving attention.

We need to raise $50,000 by 25 December!

Please help us take a huge step towards our goal this Giving Tuesday by donating here:

New arrival!

The Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre has recently welcomed a new resident—a tiny female orangutan named Pororo.

The one-year-old was found by a local resident on a road within an oil palm plantation.

Thanks to the gentle care and endless love from her surrogate mother and the veterinarians, Pororo is growing stronger each day and taking her first little steps toward a future in the wild.

Discover her full story here:
orangutans.co.nz/news/a-fragile-start

To support orangutans like Pororo on her long journey to freedom, please consider giving to our Christmas Appeal. We need to build a key operational facility at our new, relocated Nyary Menteng Centre. This facility will enable us to provide the best care for our rescued orangutan orphans. For example, it will allow us to store the 4.5 tons of food we need each month to feed them.

Please donate here:
