The Problem
There are numerous threats to the viability of the remaining wild orangutan population in Indonesia and Malaysia. The primary threat is the loss of habitat with up to 80% of suitable forest in Indonesia and Malaysia having been lost in the past 20 years. Other threats, which often go hand-in-hand with the destruction of the rainforest, are the illegal pet trade
and poaching.

Do you remember Sie-Sie, the #orangutan whom the BOS team released into the wild last April?
Unlike most #orangutans who immediately climb trees or quietly distance themselves after release, Sie-Sie reacted with aggression—showing signs of stress due to the long journey to the release site.
How is he doing today? Find out here:

Bumi livin his best life!
#WorldOrangutanDay is finally here! 🎉 🦧
We're starting the most important day of the year here at BOS New Zealand, followed by BOS Australia, BOS Japan, the BOS Foundation in Indonesia, and our partners in Europe and the USA. It's a global celebration of one of our closest living relatives: the orangutans.
But what would a #party be without a #surprise? In fact, we have two surprises in store for you! 🙌
1) Only today, on World Orangutans Day, we will give away a free 2026 orangutan calendar to every new #orangutan adopter!
Adopting an orangutan is one of the most powerful ways to support the #orangutans in our care. Your #adoption helps provide essential medical treatment, food, and a safe, loving environment for our orangutan orphans, helping them grow strong enough for their eventual release back into the wild.
Adopt today here:

2) In celebration of this year's World Orangutan Day, Love Nature will air an all-day marathon of the beloved documentary series' Orangutan Jungle School' and the spinoff 'Becoming Orangutan' across their global platforms (including NatureTime in New Zealand).
Season 3 will also be live-streamed worldwide on Love Nature's YouTube channel for at least one month starting today (excluding viewers in the UK, Germany, and Italy).

Happy Orangutan Day to our friends at Borneo Orangutan Survival - BOS New Zealand!🦧
This #WorldOrangutanDay on 19 August, you can be part of something truly life-changing!
By adopting one of our #orphaned #orangutans, you support the long-term care and rehabilitation of #baby orangutans like Nia.
It’s a symbolic #adoption, but the impact is very real, from medical treatment and food to the safe, loving environment they need to grow strong enough so we can eventually release them back into their wild #rainforest home.
Please join our adoption #family this World Orangutan Day and give #babies like Nia a second chance in life here: orangutans.co.nz/adopt

Precious Nia. Whoever took her mom I hope you choke on your profits. You know not the true cost of your actions, and money makes you not care
Mating behaviour is one of the most important forms of social interaction in the life of #orangutans. It plays a vital role in ensuring the survival of a species that is increasingly threatened with #extinction.

Today is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples—an excellent opportunity to celebrate the #IndigenousPeoples of #borneo.
Conservation of the #Environment starts with the local communities. By safeguarding Indonesia's unique #ecosystems and natural resources, we also safeguard the livelihoods and traditions of the people who call this remarkable country home.
We are not alone on the frontlines of #orangutan conservation. Even in our most remote working areas, our work and changes to the natural landscape impact the local communities.
By employing local staff, purchasing consumables locally, and working within communities to build awareness and capacity, we help to empower people to better their livelihoods while at the same time protecting the environment.
Without their invaluable knowledge of the #rainforest #habitat and support for saving orangutans and their homes, we could not carry out our essential orangutan #conservation work.
